Since 2002 US Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the UK based International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) have been working to “harmonize” existing accounting standards. The adoption of IFRS in the US is far from certain, as the Security Exchange Commission (SEC) continues to debate whether to mandate US public firms adopt International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). As a result it is important for US accounting professionals to understand the nuances of IFRS and how it differs from US GAAP.
